It is cricket’s equivalent of Brazil vs Germany or Italy vs Argentina in a football World Cup — a high voltage contest. India vs Australia is the match of the quarterfinals, nay match of the championship. Not for nothing Tim Nielsen says it is a mini-final.

So evenly are the teams stacked up, separating them will be exercising in futility. A shot, a throw, a wide or a dot ball can decide the outcome of the contest. “We’ll have to be on our toes for 100 overs,” said Ricky Ponting. MS Dhoni concurred, stating that his side cannot afford a blink. One moment of lapse can change game on its axis. A humdinger is on the cards at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera on Thursday.



On the eve of the game, the teams’ approach was that of cultivated pragmatism than overt show of bravado. This is very unlike an Australian team.



“We’ll play the Australian way and let our cricket do all the talking,” said Ponting with more hope than conviction. Dhoni was cautiously optimistic that his batsmen will be able to curb their avarice and prevent another meltdown in the batting powerplay.

“We’ll not try to go for the broke,” said the India skipper. “We’ll keep smaller targets in mind. Controlling emotions will be a big factor, but I think most of the Indian cricketers are good at it. We win some and we lose some.”



One of the big sideshow of the second quarterfinal will be the appearance of Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar in a World Cup game. One of them will have played his last game in the World Cup by Thursday night. Ponting said the contest is not about two individuals but about two teams and then hastened to add that 100 international centuries will be an incredible effort. “We will make sure that he doesn’t get it tomorrow,” the Australia skipper said.


Whether or not Tendulkar gets 100th century, India will be looking for a substantial contribution from the Little Master, particularly because of the uncertainty over the availability of Virender Sehwag for the game. A lot will depend on how India start — in both batting and bowling — which means performance of Sehwag (if he is fit) and Tendulkar will be crucial to the team’s chances.



Australians have said that they have plans in place for the key Indian batsmen and bowlers. A lot will depend on how these players, particularly the openers, will handle the barrage of short balls from Brett Lee & Co. India, sure, are not a one or a two-batsman team but Dhoni will need his premier batters to get going. When Lionel Messi fires, Argentina’s chances of winning becomes that much easier.

ഒരു റെയില്‍വെപ്ലാറ്റ്‌ഫോമിന്റെ തൊട്ടടുത്തുള്ള കൂരിരുട്ടിലാണ് അവളെ ഗോവിന്ദചാമിയെന്ന നീചന്‍ ഇരുമ്പു പാളയത്തില്‍ തലയടിച്ച് കൊലചെയ്ത് പീഡിപ്പിച്ചത്. ട്രെയിനിലെ യാത്രക്കാര്‍ അത് കണ്ടിരുന്നു, ഗാര്‍ഡ് റൂമിന്റെ തൊട്ടടുത്ത കംപാര്‍ട്ടമെന്റിലായിരുന്നു ആ പെണ്‍കുട്ടി. പേടിച്ചരണ്ട പെണ്‍കുട്ടി കംപാര്‍ട്ടമെന്റില്‍ നിന്ന് പുറത്ത് ചാടി. പുറത്ത് ചാടുന്നവത് കണ്ടവരുണ്ട്. അവള്‍ക്ക് പിന്നാലെ വ്യഭിചാരിയും പുറത്ത് ചാടി. ഇതൊക്കെ ഗാര്‍ഡും കംപാര്‍ട്ടമെന്റിലെ യാത്രക്കാരും കണ്ടിരുന്നു. ഗാര്‍ഡ് വണ്ടി നിറുത്താന്‍ താല്‍പര്യം കാണിച്ചില്ല. അപകടം അറിഞ്ഞ ടോമിയെന്ന യുവാവ് ചങ്ങലവലിച്ച് വണ്ടി നിര്‍ത്താന്‍ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു. സഹയാത്രികര്‍ അയാളെ തടഞ്ഞു. ‘ ഞങ്ങളെ ഉപദ്രവിക്കരുതെന്ന്’ അവര്‍ പറഞ്ഞതായി ടോമി സാക്ഷ്യപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. സഹയാത്രികരുടെ സഹകരണമില്ലായ്മകൊണ്ട് ടോമിക്ക് ചങ്ങല വലിക്കാനുള്ള ധൈര്യം ഉണ്ടായില്ലെന്നാണ് ആ ചെറുപ്പക്കാരന്‍ പറയുന്നത്. ടോമിയെ തടഞ്ഞ യാത്രക്കാരും ടോമി തന്നെയും നമ്മുടെ ജനതയുടെ നിഷ്‌ക്രിയതയുടെയും നിരാശാജനകമായ അലംഭാവത്തിന്റെയും പ്രതിരൂപങ്ങളാണ്. ഒരു സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ഹൃദയശൂന്യതയുടെ മുദ്രയും കൊടിയടയാളവും. അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ ഈ പെണ്‍കുട്ടിയുടെ രക്തസാക്ഷിത്വത്തില്‍ അവര്‍ക്കെല്ലാം പങ്കുണ്ട്. അവര്‍ക്കുള്ളത്ര പങ്ക് നമുക്കെല്ലാവര്‍ക്കുമുണ്ട്. കാരണം നമ്മളെല്ലാം ഇന്ന് ജീവിക്കുന്നത് നമുക്ക് വേണ്ടി മാത്രമാണ്. അവനവന് വേണ്ടി. ലോകത്തിനെന്ത് സംഭവിച്ചാലും നമ്മുടെ തടി കേടാവരുതെന്ന് കരുതുന്ന ഒരു സമൂഹത്തെ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചത് നമ്മളെല്ലാം ചേര്‍ന്നാണ്.


വെറുതെ വാചകമടിക്കാനും സംവാദം നടത്താനും മാത്രമേ നമുക്കിന്നാവൂ. പൊള്ളയായ വാക്കുകള്‍ക്കപ്പുറം നമ്മള്‍ കര്‍മ്മശൂന്യരാണ്, സ്‌നേഹശൂന്യരാണ്, അല്‍പന്മമാരാണ്, അസാന്‍മാര്‍ഗ്ഗികളാണ്.

കേരളം മുന്നോട്ടുവെച്ച ഡിമാന്റുകള്‍ ഒരുപരിധി വരെ അംഗീകരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടാണ് കരാര്‍ ഒപ്പിട്ടിരിയ്ക്കുന്നത്. പുതിയ ധാരണപ്രകരം പ്രത്യേക സാമ്പത്തിക മേഖലയില്‍ 12 ശതമാനം ഭൂമിയില്‍ ടീകോം കമ്പനിയ്ക്ക് സ്വതന്ത്രവകാശം ലഭിയ്ക്കും. എന്നാല്‍ വില്‍പനാവകാശം ടീകോമിന് ഉണ്ടാവില്ല. ഇക്കാര്യം അംഗീകരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടാണ് ദുബയ് പ്രതിനിധികള്‍ കരാറില്‍ ഒപ്പിട്ടിരിയ്ക്കുന്നത്.

Japan sinks Australia to win Asian Cup

Japan on Saturday won an unprecedented fourth Asian Cup title after beating Australia 1-0 after extra-time in the final played in the Khalifa Stadium.

Substitute Tadanari Lee scored the only goal of the match for the Japan.

Although both sides played a cautious game, there were scoring opportunities throughout the match, with Japanese goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima pulling off a number of excellent saves.

Australian substitute Robbie Kruse nearly gave his side the lead in the first-half of extra-time with a header, but Kawashima did well to palm the ball away.

Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni brought on Lee in the 98th minute for only his second appearance of the tournament, having previously played as a second-half substitute in Japan’s opening 1-1 draw against Jordan.

The Sanfrecce Hiroshima striker scored with a beautiful volley from a Yuto Nagatomo cross in the 119th minute to give his side their second triumph after 1992, 2000 and 2004.

Asian Cup 2011 Exclusive: We Gave Away Three Silly Goals – India’s Sunil Chhetri

Sunil Chhetri had his name on the scoresheet but the Indian striker wasn’t a satisfied man as he felt that they leaked far too many goals in a match where the scoreline could have been smaller than the 5-2 defeat to Bahrain.

India conceded a penalty inside the first ten minutes but took only a minute to find the equalizer through Gouramangi Moirangthem. Thereafter, the team’s defense went off to sleep as three goals were let in before the half-time which did put the team on the back foot after a good start to the match.



“The first half was disappointing. We conceded three silly goals and I believe we should have done a lot better than the 5-2 scoreline in the end.



“It only highlights the difference in the levels that if you make a small mistake against big teams, you have to pay for it. You just can’t switch off for moment or two as it may hurt you,” said Chhetri.



The Sporting Kansas player hailed the contribution of senior pro Renedy Singh and credited the goal to the latter too.

“I think the goal was Renedy’s. He is an amazing player and in the absence of Bhaichung, he was motivating us on the field. It was a brilliant free-kick for the first goal and the second goal was Renedy’s amazing left foot,” said the former Dempo SC star.

Team India Is Very Organized – Bahrain Coach Salman Sharida

Bahrain coach Salman Sharida made his intentions clear as he mentioned that he shall include several attack minded players in the line-up against India on Friday as they need a victory in order to remain in contention to qualify into the quarters of the Asian Cup 2011.

Having lost their group C opener to South Korea 2-1, the West Asian side have their minds set on winning three points against the Men in Blue.

“Every match has its own circumstance. We will select good forward players and at the same time, we will not forget our defence to avoid counterattacks. We will change one or two players from the last match,” said Sharida.

He added that he would like to see the Koreans beat the Aussies in the other game of the group as that would help the cause of his side.

“India was organized throughout against Australia and limited the danger caused in the second half. We are thinking of winning and then we shall think of how many goals we can.

“We have the confidence in our players and if we have a chance, then we shall avail every opportunity that comes our way,” declared the former coach of Pakistan.
